******* Oscars. Most of the movies that get nominated are ****** , metaphorical and boring. I mean Life of Pi got like 5 Oscars and that movie was depressing as **** . Same with Silver Linings Playbook. Not entertaining, just mostly disappointing. Where was an Oscar for The Dark Knight Rises? The Avengers (like Seth said) was one of the most popular movies of the year and yet it didn't win anything. I don't understand this and Leo should've gotten one for this movie.

Dark knight = awesome to the max
Dark knight rises = wayyyy overrated
Avengers ?? That was entertaining, but it wasnt a "good" movie at all.

Silver linings playbook won 1 oscar, and i think it was pretty deserved, Jennifer Lawrence did an amazing job in the movie.

I agree with you on Leo, he should have been nominated before Waltz.
But the Avengers was a only a popcorn flick.
TDKR was a far from oscar material. Maybe Bane for suporting role.

The movies are (for oscar purposes) rated like a school essay. It doesn't matter how cool the **** you are writing about is.. It's all about the quality of the content. If it was based on popularity these awards would be depressing as only huge franchises like Harry Potter, Twilight and various superhero/action movies would win. Most people only want a popcorn flick with som special effects and sexy women, they don't care about the depth of the story, how well-written it is or the talent of the actors. The same way most people don't care about chord progression, meaning of song lyrics and sheer technicality (if that's a legit word) in music and therefore generic commercial and (in my opinion) superficial and ****** music is the most popular. Though it's far from the best.

Sorry for the rant

Sincerely
Anon

I loved the avengers, but if it had gotten an oscar I would shoot myself in the foot.
That's far away from an oscar mate...

Transformers 2 was one of the most popular movies when it came out and is one of the highest grossing films of all time, where are its oscars. Also Life of Pi was a really great film and so was Silver Linings Playbook so I can't really take your comment seriously.

Whats wrong with metaphorical **** ? It stimulates a deeper level of active viewing within the audience. It's for intelligent people who can look deeper than all the cg action and toilet humor (they are enjoyable, not saying otherwise) and appreciate the true artistry. I mean seriously, the most symbolic device in The Dark Knight Rises is the title. And anyone with a middle school level of literary education can clearly tell that all it refers to is the "rising" of batman after defeat and the literal rising from the pit.

I forgot people prefer movies which make them think about the deeper meaning of life instead of actually ENJOYING A ******* MOVIE.
User avatar #163 to #158 - kevinites (02/28/2013) [-]
i mean if a movie is able to make you think like that. you are sure to enjoy the movie. if you didnt enjoy the movie. you probably didnt think that way at all.
User avatar #165 to #163 - Faz (02/28/2013) [-]
Im not denying that movies which make you think like shutter island or inception aren't enjoyable but the sort of movies which win awards are the obscure ******** movies which turn out to be a parable for some issue.
User avatar #177 to #165 - kevinites (02/28/2013) [-]
thats the thing the movies that you call obscure are actually really deep and amazing.

For the minority, im a fairly intelligent person but when i watch movies i watch them for entertainment, i watch them to either laugh, cry, feel good or to get scared, i don't like watching movies where at the end im depressed which is something that usually happens in movies with deeper messages.

i like to cry but i do not like being depressed

Do you not understand the difference between depression and sadness or something? Depression and sadness are completely different and if out of the gate you don't understand that theres no point in my trying to explain it to you because you wont grasp it.

So just because a movie does its job when it aims to be depressing... You don't like it? I mean, American Beauty was depressing as **** , but it is quite honestly one of the most beautiful movies I've ever seen.
User avatar #199 to #195 - Faz (02/28/2013) [-]
Im just saying that I personally do not like depressing movies i also wouldn't count American beauty as a depressing movie, its a sad movie and a very good one at that but im meaning the types of movies which are basically reveling the dark truths of the world, i would also like to state that i don't think people knowing about the dark truths of the world is a bad thing, i think everyone should know them but again for me movies are entertainment, those types of things aren't entertaining.
#339 to #199 - bernardator (02/28/2013) [-]
and for me the depressing and thoughtful part is the entertaining one. what is up with that?

the idea isn't that the awards go to the most popular movies, it's that it goes to the best movies. Don't get me wrong, The Dark Knight Rises was fantastic, but The Life of Pi was beyond fantastic and used a lot of literary devices so the viewer could draw further meaning from it. The Avengers..... not so much.

I dunno man, maybe you interpreted Life of Pi a bit differently. You may see it as depressing, but it's a story of survival and keeping one's faith through harsh circumstances. I've read the book and watched the movie, and I see it as inspiring rather than depressing.

just because a movie was extremely popular doesnt mean that it was a good movie...
#126 to #123 - anonymous (02/28/2013) [-]
then by what standard are we measuring the quality of a movie.
User avatar #127 to #126 - ellbandito (02/28/2013) [-]
quality of actors, plot, you know, stuff vital to any movie.
#196 to #127 - fractalius (02/28/2013) [-]
So... opinions?

If 90% of people like a movie, compared to 10% hating it, isn't that a good movie?

When you're judging things based on opinions, popularity is what defines it being good/bad

You can't judge the "quality" of a movie, plot, etc. That's why in the grammies other artists vote for the winners
User avatar #114 to #108 - bernardolima (02/28/2013) [-]
You understand that the Avengers was a generic movie and The Dark Knight Rises was a very overrated movie that is clearly sub-par to the rest of the trilogy, right?

The Academy chooses mostly good movies (some are really Hollywood corruption), but normally not everything the popular opinion likes is the good thing (in the artistic sense, because everyone has the right to an opinion).

In other words, a big elitist circle jerk. ;/

Seriously though we live in an age where if people didn't know what dickbutt was, it could be seriously be taken as "contemporary art. "

It's not just the masses who have bad taste in art.

The Avengers was supposed to be pretty generic, but it was actually really good and really entertaining. It should have at least won something for special effects. I think the Dark Knight rises was okay, I don't think it deserved an Oscar. However, I think the the Dark Knight was underrated at the '09 academy awards. But I'm glad Argo won movie of year this year, it was actually really entertaining and overall a good movie.
