First of all that's assuming that the opposition is within shouting distance(remember you're dealing with ranged weapons), second of all it's a way to inform your team that you need cover while doing whatever it is or possibly that your team should be careful of your position(for example you don't want to step behind somebody firing an RPG). Communication is always key.
