Lincoln never cared about the slaves, he just wanted the confederate to rejoin the union as soon as possible.

later in the war, Lincoln said that the slaves should be freed as a way to boost northern spirits and give them a CAUSE for why they are fighting, besides keeping the union together. The border states were the only ones that got to keep their slaves, because if they broke to the confederate, the north knew it was doomed.

yes, and Lincoln never said they couldnt. South Carolina promised to secede if a Republican was elected as president. And they followed on their promise when Lincoln was elected, and other states joined them.

Although Lincoln didnt do anything about it since the Constitution didnt give him the power to bring them back. The war started when he sent federal troops to enforce a bunker. The south saw this as a threat and decided to attack.
