The thing a lot of Atheists are worried about in the U.S. is separation of church and state. One of our main political parties is pretty much a religious party, using religion to justify their stance on social issues, and in most cases their stance limits the liberties of others. This is referring to gay marriage and stem sell research faced a huge halt because of the ban of abortion. Also (numbers may be wrong) only around 40% of Americans believe in evolution, which is a scary thought seeing how much evidence we have supporting it. The only reason why evolution isn't accepted by a majority of the population is because it goes against their faith, not that they are skeptical about the data.

I understand that. But instead of discussing pros and cons, argumenting in debate clubs, forums or whatever other spot to go on about those matters, all I see is intolerant people (religious, but maybe even more non-religious) bashing each other and ridiculizing the opposite beliefs. Beyond the point of the healthy satire that most of people would enjoy. In my agnostic, don't-care-about-the-matter opinion.

Yeah I've noticed agnostic's attitudes are much easier to get along with. I think passionate individuals on both sides of the spectrum are blown away that others don't think the same way as them, and it ultimately aggravates them. The one good thing about the easy access to debates about this means that this does become an important issue discussed more. The atheist community has really flourished through the internet. I will argue passionately that everyone should have a right to any faith they choose but their faith should not affect the liberties or freedoms of anybody else.

Here is where I think we have a bit of a problem here in FJ... it's supposed to be a site for fun, and we're stepping into mocking some people beliefs, some times viciously I would say. I would love to see the political and religious debate step a knot down, more love and respect... I mean, there has to be ways to have fun without offending and attacking what other people believe!
