Yeah, me too. Can't see why everyone hates the movie. I mean, I do think the books are leagues better, but the movie had wonderful acting and caught the atmosphere really well. And it's how I got my friend who hates reading to start reading more.

I thought Jim Carrey did great even though it wasn't 100% faithful to the book.............

It's a dark comedy.
It's an incredibly sad series but Lemony Snicket just makes it so humorous. He has a bizarre habit of breaking the fourth wall which can very from awesome to annoying.
Sometimes the writing can get a little odd to further illustrate his point. For example, sometimes you'll find that a few pages will be completely black or blank with no writing on them at all. Sometimes you could find yourself reading the same sentence over and over again. Sometimes you could find yourself reading the same sentence over and over again. Sometimes you could find yourself reading the same sentence over and over again. Sometimes you could find yourself reading the same sentence over and over again. Other times you'll find you're reading the same page over and over again should he want to express the affects of Deja vu.
I recall one instance he was describing reflections and he kept reversing the letters and turning them upside down so unless you had a lot of patience and a mirror on your person it's near impossible to read.
So, I warn you, plot aside, you'll want to throw the book at a wall sometimes.
His narrative is really what makes reading his stories so unique and they utterly failed to grasp this in the movie.

This, of course, is just the writing style you'll find in the books. The actually story is quite nice. It starts out with just the Baudelaire children receiving bad news but as the story progresses it get's increasingly more complex. For a while it follows a pretty basic plot. Orphans get sent to a guardian, Count Olaf puts on a disguise, weird crap goes down. As you get further into the series this gradually shifts so it doesn't feel like you're you're watching a Scooby Doo episode anymore.

This might be a little confusing but I'm a big fan of the Series and used to read it to my best friend and younger siblings.

If you like being depressed, yes. read them. When I read them though it was kind of like a fake depression. I don't know how to describe it. I acknowledged that I was supposed to be depressed, but it was written so that everything went wrong 100% of the time, so it felt really fake.

Still great to read. There is a lot of mystery that kept me interested.
