i had a thing where i was in a dream yet i'd open my eyes every now and then but i couldn't move my body and then when i closed them i went back into the dream

That's called Lucid dreaming, or dreaming in a state of awareness. You are awake, but your brain thinks you're asleep. It can happen when you lie completely still for about an hour without being able to sleep. Your brain starts checking if you're awake by jolting your legs or arms a little, but if you ignore them, you start dreaming. It's very fun to experiment with, because you can controll your dreams

I think what turtlepoop described is not lucid dreaming, its sleep paralysis.

Sleep paralysis is one of the side-effects of lucid dreaming. Your mind believes you're unconcious, and paralyzes your body so that you don't flail around when you're dreaming.
