it just gets annoying to me because one of my friends was actually going places with his life then he started smoking again after almost a year of not and he went from "im going to join the military and have a family" to "im gonna sell weed and fuck village bitches" i know weed wasnt the only thing. my roommate smokes regularly and is doing better in school than me but thats the person not the weed. and if one more person says its used to treat cancer im going to punch a baby. its used to treat the symptoms of chemo not the disease itself

I feel you, bro. I've actually lost quite a few friends that just decided to make weed their #1 priority. If only people would realize it's not really an answer to any problem, and that "everything in moderation" applies to weed as well, I don't think it would be such a problem.

It hardly lowers lung capacity because the tar clears out in no time (unlike cigarette tar).
Not every weed smoker smokes as much as an alcoholic drinks, and even those who do aren't nearly as unhealthy as alcoholics.
It only lowers your reaction time when you're high, so driving or playing sports or doing anything that requires some minimal coordination while high is a bad idea.
It doesn't lower sperm count. I don't even know where that idea came from because it didn't come from research.
Weed causes short-term memory loss while high. Once the high is gone, memory is fully restored.

Two things that are bad about weed:
Because weed is an illegal drug, often enough drug dealers sell weed too. This means sometimes weed gets laced, or dealers encourage harmful drug use. This could just be fixed by regulating and taxing weed.
Also, if you have a genetic predisposition to schizophrenia, weed can make it more likely that you develop schizophrenia. Usually you can tell if you have this predisposition if being high on weed makes you panic or worry a lot.

I can't make any sense out of this comment. If it's legal, they won't associate weed with harmful drugs because it won't have all the negative stigma. And just ethically speaking, people who use or deal weed (and weed alone) don't deserve any punishment because it really isn't bad in itself.

But if weed isn't a bad thing, then the law is wrong and they don't deserve punishment. If we make it legal, they won't get punishment anyway because it's a legal thing to do. So why open that door? My answer is another question: Why not? If it's not doing any harm (or at least it's not doing nearly the harm alcohol does) it doesn't make sense to keep it illegal.

I have looked it up. The best most credible research states in a hundred different ways that weed is relatively harmless. It's actually useful in some small ways. Do you even know what you're talking about? Have YOU looked it up?

1. Yes, I was aware of this interpretation. It relates to what I stated earlier about schizophrenia development.
2. We also know about stress as a major cause for addiction now, and we take better care of people while raising them because of it. Also, the word you're looking for is "dependent" not "addicted" because marijuana isn't an addictive substance. I know what you mean though.
3. That actually is true, which is why we shouldn't smoke all the time. You'll find in more normal research settings where people aren't smoking every day, the brain develops fine.

As a clinical term, dependent does work better than addictive. I thank you for all the information, but I hate to say, we're probably not going to arrive at a full agreement.

But let me just point out a few things:
a) Consuming marijuana through baked goods (edibles) or through a vaporizer has zero effect on your lungs and lung capacity. So it is not just pot in general that can cause lung problems. b) When you are "high", you do have a slow reaction time and your memory obviously not at its best But there has been consistent research to prove that there are no long-term effects of marijuana on neurocognitive performance (see: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22731735)
c) Weed is not a weakness (I lol'd when I read that). It's a recreational drug for some and medicine for others. Just like it's fun sometimes to go out for a beer with a few friends, it's fun to smoke some weed with people you like. What's wrong with that? That doesn't mean you're not capable of having fun sober. Also, medical marijuana has been proven time and time again that it helps people with depression, anxiety, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, etc.

I have a feeling you've been saving this speech up for some time so I won't go into detail about all the other things marijuana has been proven to do. I'm not, as stated above, saying that weed is the answer to every problem in the world. But marijuana, unless abused beyond the normal limits (as in smoking thousands of joints a day), has no lasting physical (or mental) effects. My brother smoked weed every single day, yet managed to have a great group of friends (both smokers and non-smokers), was salutatorian in his class, and now he's excelling in his class at uni. Please don't be so narrow-minded as to think that all "stoners" are the classic stereotypes.
