The band does. Not much per person, but out of 100 people, thats probally $80 lost and usually THOUSANDS download illigally.

no the label purely makes the money after paying the artist a set sum to make it. the only bands that get money from sales is indie bands.

if i recall correctly bands make about 20% of the profit from cds
lets say the cd is $12 (most of them are sold at that price at walmart)

12.00*.20 = 2.40

2.40 * 100 (people) = $240

the band makes about $240 per 100 cds sold


now lets looks at the rest of the money

12.00 * 100 = $1200

1200 - 240 = $960

$960 goes to all the other people involved in the cds being sold
meaning the band lost $960

(that being said they probably lose even more than that, 20% was the highest value i found through google. tho it was on wikianswers)

They don't lose 960$. They aren't 960$ less wealthy at the end of the day. They just didn't gain that money.

Or I can not be a complete dick like 94% of the internet and actually pay for something I want. I get the CDs because I can import them as ALAC files, exact same as FLAC, and use them on my iPod. Also I like to have a physical copy should something happen, say my hard drive crashes.

Your right, the band makes no money from record sales, but that's because they use the record sales to pay back the record company(they give the band money to create the album). If you don't buy the album, then they have to use money from touring/merch to pay back the record company, which cuts into the amount of money the band makes.

not as true, they still get some money, and as comment #46 stated, it does influence, besides actually buying gives you the 100% sure way to get the 320kbps compressed lossless audio!!!
