fair enough, but I just don't agree with hitting people to make them do what you want, that's just my opinion. Isn't it better to gain the respect and trust of your kid and have him listen to you and follow rules that way, rather than have them following rules out of fear? If you're teaching them the proper morals from the start, often there's no need for hitting them, or so I would think

Also I'm not someone who's super morally conflicted on this subject; if you have kids, raise them how you want. I just wouldn't raise mine that way, that's all I mean to say.

Being beaten =/= physical discipline for children

I don't believe in hitting children personally, and if I had kids I don't think I could bring myself to do it, but it never did me any harm as a kid. My parents were great to me. They had the perfect balance of 'the carrot and the stick'. Not just the praise (carrot) for doing something good, but also the punishment for something bad (the stick). And before you say anything, the carrot and stick is a metaphor. I didn't get hit with a stick and never was rewarded with carrots.

Oh yeah. Hitting a child as punishment is fine in my books as long as you don't do any real damage, don't hit the face or anything, and as long as you know the moderation of it. Hit the child not in anger, but in love, and in wanting to instill the correct morals on the child. Okay, as they are growing up they behave out of fear and not out of morals, but there comes a point where behaving in a good moral fashion becomes second nature, and the child understands why their parents did that. As long as you reward the child for doing good things, they realise what is right and what is wrong and know that when they do wrong, they are rightfully punished.

I agree that the child will learn at some point why their parents hit them (I eventually learned, anyway) and I do understand the effectiveness that hitting them instills on their morals. And yeah there is certainly a line that shouldn't be crossed and usually isn't crossed by most parents who use this form of discipline. And furthermore I don't judge; raise your kid however you want. With that being said, I just don't see the the point of resorting to violence when you can try and make your kids understand morals by simply explaining things to them; which is the way I would try and raise my kids. It's just my opinion, but you wouldn't get your point across to an adult by hitting them, and though you can argue that children need a different means of understanding morals than adults do, I am still convinced that there are better ways of teaching lessons to children than by hitting them.

I don't agree with hitting children, primarily because drawing the line in that is quite hard to do and therefore that would create situations in which it is actual child abuse, but one can claim they are doing it to raise their kids. If people hit their kids they have to know when it's appropriate, what not many know. Where would one draw the line?

Second, but for most people probably more important than my primary reason, because there are far better ways to instill discipline and patience in children on a young age. The french have mastered this: in general their kids behave in, for example, a restaurant, unlike in, say, America, where kids usually make a fuss and are loud and general obnoxious twats.

The problem is people indulge kids way too soon and too much these days. What the french do is, from infancy they don't breastfeed the babe whenever he cries, which is custom in other countries, but they do it on the same time each day. This way the baby very quickly "realizes" it won't get fed by drawing attention. This way it sets a precedent for later on, where they won't get what they want by being loud and drawing attention.

There's probably more to it, but this is what stuck most with what I read from an article.

I never threw hissy fits. Well, ONE time. Literally, only once. I was in a sweets shop with my dad, buying a cake for my sister's 6th birthday, (I was 4), and I wanted a cupcake. This cupcake was BEAUTIFUL. I mean the whole sha-bang. I asked my dad and he said "No, we're about to have supper." That set me off. I fucking wailed my lungs out, and I mean until I was about to pass out. So, he hastily bought the cupcake and right as it was in arms reach and I had stopped crying, I reached for it. He yanked it away and shoved the whole thing in his mouth, making noises that made the cupcake seem like god food. He then wiped his frosting-covered mouth and said "If you ever embarrass me like that again, I promise you that you will never touch a grain of sugar until you move out." That seemed like a totally irrational thing to do at the time, but me and my dad have the best relationship. So, now I look back and I could not be more grateful that he did that, because my nightmare is when I have kids, is that they will be brattish little shits.

The days my aunt would not be wearing jeans, she would carry a leather belt with studs in it to intimidate my cousins, I don't think she ever really used it.

Although I will never forget one time when she got so pissed at one of my cousins for scratching his little brother's face, that she brought out a cutting board and a massive fucking cleaver and demanded that he bring his hand so she could cut it off.
She was obviously faking it because she let him off with a warning but she played it off so well it because he started crying and begging for his hand and never to do anything bad ever again.

What a poor argument. Just because we would've done something as a kid doesn't mean we don't get to hate it as an adult or even teenager. I didn't know what I was doing when I was being an annoying kid, but I know I would've hated me.

I did do that when i was younger, but my mom would never give in to the screaming and yelling. She did respond to calm rational discussion though, and if i could convince her to buy me a toy or whatever using actual reasoning instead of just screaming for it there was an actual chance of her buying it.
