Scientists believe that the big bang happened approximately 13.7 billion years ago, and this timeline (starwars.wikia(DOT 						*****					)com/wiki/Timeline) states that it occurred 13.002 billion years BBY (before the Battle of Yavin). That would put the events of the films at approximately 698 million years ago, during earth's cryogenian period, when the planet was almost entirely covered with ice, just before the Cambrian explosion. Not to be a dick. But i think star wars is suppose to be a recollection of stories told in a first person narrative through many characters. The "long time ago" probably is the narrator talking about the past, while he himself is in the future!
