It's... hard I mean to some extent it's funny and you laugh but if you have a char you really like and have him killed because everyone is just joking around... that sucks.

how do you play online?

uhm... you find a group of players, ask them to download TTopRPG (you can use it for rolls and such) and then you speak to each other over skype. though I prefer meeting with a group ^^

where could i find such a group?

depends on what you wanna play, first you gotta pick out a game setting you find nice, I like Pathfinder Society (there's no evil in that one, so you can't do PvP action) or there's just normal Pathfinder, Pathfinder operates on the 3.5 rules with some modification. Or you could go for a starwars setting or something along those lines, search for Tabletop games and find a game you like.

Thing is that playing a Ttop RPG is not as easy as playing a RPG on the computer, it takes a lot more thought and a lot more planning to create a character, though you will eventually love it when you get the hang of it.

The way I got into the whole scene was playing Dungeons and Dragons online (an MMO based on those rules but with a lot fewer options) also it's a lot of fun.

but I'll give you an example, I have a character planned out he's going to be as following:

he has an oracle level allowing to to cast a mist so people can't see him, though he has a special abillity that allows him to see through the mist, this allows him to catch people off guard, now my plan with this character was a ranged rogue with sneak attacks(extra damage when the opponent isn't aware of your presence or what you're doing) so I stand in my little mist and shoot arrows, but that was a bit too boring so I decided that I would want 4 arms (to do this I took an alchemist and went through a path that gave me ekstra arms) this allows me to wield a bow as well as 2 hand crossbows for even more damage! so my character is basically a 4 armed sneaky machine that rains hell down on the battlefield .

you go here, and ask for a group, but first have a character created and be ready, you can play with a pregen (pregenerated character) they're boring though. but! you can add the xp you get with them to your real character.
