Well, he is a talented wizard, so he knows blocking spells and things like that, but he also doesn't really trust anyone. Nobody that wants to kill him can really get close enough to him. But if someone did, which they have before, he has his horcruxes and he can be revived. Which is why Harry was destroying them all so he could kill him for good.

It's probably a number of things that make a wizard strong. Skill, genetics and apparently love. Having the Elder wand effects it too. I dunno, J.K. Rowling seemed to be just making some of that shit up as she went along.
