Yes. But even someone under average weight (skinny) won't have abs unless they exercise to increase their muscle mass.

If you're extremely skinny (borderline anorexic skinny) but don't exercise, you'll be able to see the vertical sides of the abdominal muscles, be there will be very little definition. To get actual abs (the way most people think of it) you'll need to exercise and increase the muscle mass.

Being skinny helps, but it's only one piece of the puzzle.

That said... Fuck anyone and everyone who says skinny abs don't count. Fit shaming is retarded as all hell. "You're physically fit but you don't go to the gym all the time to get totally ripped. You're just as bad as being fat," is possibly the most retarded bullshit I've ever heard. No wonder obesity is an epidemic, when the only people we'll give recognition are the cream of the crop.

I agree that skinny =/= fit, however it's not unhealthy (unless your anorexic of course). I should have used the word healthy instead of fit in my previous post. Being skinny is healthy. It's not as healthy as exercising and having lots of muscle mass, but it's still healthy.

We should avoid creating a stigma against healthy people and grouping them with unhealthy ones. One of the main reasons anyone tries to stay healthy is the social stigma of being fat. Most people don't give a shit about the health complications, falling to, "It won't happen to me," syndrome. The health improvements aren't immediately tangible, so they're not motivating.

If we associate skinny with obese, only praising the fit, then a lot of people who are currently skinny and healthy will say, "Fuck it, I fucking love cheetos. Who cares, I'm not fit anyway." and get fat, becoming unhealthy. Obviously this is a very pointed example, but you get the point.

To achieve "abs" as seen in the picture, all one has to do is go through puberty and have a fast metabolism. Anorexic have little muscle because their body resorts to eating away their muscles in order to sustain itself. You get abs like that in said picture just from performing basic day to day activities and not eating like a fatty. Not much to it.

While this is true, I have friends who exercise less than me and they have abs. (I'm an average weight, not fat but not super skinny) I don't think they have abs because they are skinny, but I think it helps a lot.

You're actual weight has absolutely nothing to do with how healthy you are. A 250-pound linebacker is a shit-ton healthier than a 170-pound couch-potato with a beer belly.

Underweight isn't an issue unless you're not eating healthily to achieve that weight. Fat tissue is used for storing nutrients. If you're eating enough nutrients anyway, you have no need for fat. Famine aside (you don't have much stored energy), there's no reason to be worried about being underweight.

Now, you can be healthier by building muscle (which will increase your weight), of course, because this means your exercising. This is not the same as saying being underweight is unhealthy. It just means you can be healthier.

Being overweight (obese) is unhealthy. It leads to highly increased strain on cardiovascular system, typically leading to heart disease. All the excess nutrients which your body wants to store as fat have to float in your bloodstream longer due to concentration gradients (think of it trying to find room for the fat - the more you have, the longer the search). The longer it floats through your body, the more time it has to get stuck to your veins/arteries and clog them.

TL;DR: Overweight = unhealthy ... Physically fit and active = healthy ... Skinny = Healthy, but you could do better by exercising.
