In Romeo and Juliet, the meaning of “Wherefore art thou Romeo?” (Act 2, scene 2, line 33) is not “Where are you, Romeo?” but “Why are you Romeo?”
There is no reason for her to ask the mailman why he is Romeo
There is no reason for her to ask the mailman why he is Romeo
Except the word "Wherefore" doesn't mean "Where"
It's Shakespeare talk for "Why" In this scene in the play, (Act II Scene II) Juliet is asking Romeo in an apostrophe (as he is not present) why he has to be who he is. It is his name and his lineage that keep the two apart, and she is distressed because of their separation. She then follows this with "That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet", indicating that she would have him relinquish his name so that they can be together. This is one of the most commonly misinterpreted lines of any soliloquy in all of Shakespeare.

>Get part of Romeo in Romeo and Juliet
>"inb4 Wherefor art thou jokes."
>Mom looking for me, sends me that gotddamn line, asking me where i was
>I respond: "Because i got the part."
MFW I had to spend 20 minutes explaining that wherefor meant "why"

Okay, that's enough bad jokes for today

wherefore means "Why" for fucks sake. It's not "Where". And the comma is unnecessary

Silly author. The characters' ethnicities were accidentally switched.
