Dictatorships are bad, mmmmk?

very very bad

Why are you guys so anti-
dictators? Imagine if America
was a dictatorship. You could
let 1% of the people have all
the nation' s wealth. You could
help your rich friends get '
richer by cutting their use
And bailing them out when
they gamble and lose. You
could ignore the needs of the
poor for health care and
education. Your media would
appear free, but would secretly
be controlled by one person
and his family. You could
wiretap phones. You could
torture foreign prisoners. You could - -
have rigged elections. You could he about why you go to war. You could
M your prisons with one particular racial group, and no one would
complain. You could use the media to scare the people into supporting
policies that are against their interests."

"You could fill your prisons with one particular racial group"

What is the solution to this? Let Black people go until the racial proportions are more acceptable? Or just throw innocent White people in prison to compensate?

Or are we going to pretend that the crime rate is not different for different races?
#48 to #46 - fuckyosixtyminutes (02/13/2013) [-]
Thumb me down if you want, but this isn't really rhetorical. I'd love to hear some answers on this from those who consider racial discrepancy in prisons a problem.
#47 to #46 - anonymous (02/13/2013) [-]
we don't lock people in, when they are smoking joints. that would save a lot of prison space
#50 to #47 - fuckyosixtyminutes (02/13/2013) [-]
What does that do to address the racial discrepancy? I agree it's a bad idea to lock people up for weed (I think it shouldn't even be illegal), but it's not like that accounts for the crime statistics being so skewed by race.
#65 to #50 - pyromania (05/17/2013) [-]
Unfortunately, despite similar levels of drug use african americans are imprisoned on drug related charges at a rate nearly three times that of their white counterparts.
#66 to #65 - fuckyosixtyminutes (05/17/2013) [-]
As I said in the original comment, what's your solution? Locking up innocent whites to balance the numbers, or letting blacks go? And don't say de-criminalize weed because that's nto realyl the point, even if it is a good idea.
#67 to #66 - pyromania (05/18/2013) [-]
The solution is neither locking up additional white people nor releasing already imprisoned African Americans. In truth we have far too many prisoners as a whole. We, America, have about 5% of the world’s population but more than a quarter of the world’s inmates. What we really need is a relatively large scale prison reform. We need to decriminalize some basically harmless things, and try to not send people to jail in the first place.
One of the biggest issues is that enough people who go to prison are hardened by it that we can’t make an across the board release. Honestly I’d be fine with most nonviolent offenders not being in prison, BUT we need some form of reform and rehabilitation program before we can really start to do that.
#68 to #67 - fuckyosixtyminutes (05/19/2013) [-]
Well, the topic at hand was racial indiscrepancy, not general prison policy, I'm going to excuse myself from this conversation becaues that's the topic I was interested in, and because on general prison policy, we'd probably agree on too much to have an interesting conversation anyway.

I love america, and I believe in it.
I just believe that we should be following post ww2 capitalism.
Which means build up, build up, build up.
get as much of production back to usa. For example, Apple employs 15.000 people in china making their products. If they did it in USA price would go up only marginally. If you are willing to pay 199 dollars for iPhone you'd pay 210 dollars too.
Lots of good, well paying jobs, with good job security mean lots of spending. Means more sales, means more profit everywhere.
Capitalism everyone is doing now is 80ies capitalism that is based on taking already build up companies, tear them down to bare bones, take the production out, drop 80% of emloyees and maximize profit short term. Stockholders make a fortune, everyone else is fu**ed. And it keeps being done to new companies that build up and go public. Our middle class percentage is dropping, and we now have lower social mobility then western europe and CHINA. Meaning you have better chance of getting rich if you are not born rich in France, Germany and China then you do in USA. That sucks. It goes against everything USA is.
User avatar #40 to #35 - PubLandlord (02/13/2013) [-]
Prices wouldn't go up marginally they would have to go up a lot, the amount of money you spend in China on workers would be far far less than spending it in America.

Companies aren't all trying to make short term profits, it's just as a shareholder why would you care if Apple was in China if you are getting high dividends, the goal of the firm is to maximize shareholders wealth. Production in America would not support that goal
#42 to #40 - angelusprimus (02/13/2013) [-]
Researchers at the Personal Computing Industry Center estimate the assembly value of a $500 iPad at about $12. In USA it would be around 30 dollars. Sizable increase, yes, but not really breaking point.
But that is ASSEMBLY. That is ONLY thing done in china. Actual components are made in South Korea, Japan, Taiwan and Germany. Hardly low wage countries. All that COULD be done in USA, but it wouldn't be as convenient. Long term it would lower the prices of all electronics, sure, but we have to have a good profit margin for the stockholders, so major investments that bring jobs to USA are inconvenient.
And THAT that " the goal of the firm is to maximize shareholders wealth" is whats wrong. Henry Ford defined goals to the firm as "Profiting the owner, workers and community" that is how you build a strong economy and powerful nation. Thats what we done when america was growing and thriving. When companies believe they have duty only to the stockholders, then you get... well Rome in late empire era. Small number of truly super rich, masses of poor that are kept cheaply entertained and fed. How did that go for Rome?
Rome was superpower as long as it depended on small farmer and free worker, middle class, but once super rich consumed the small it kept consuming itself untill it fell.
We should learn from history.

That's a load of BS
#44 to #43 - angelusprimus (02/13/2013) [-]
If it is, give arguments. And show me how its wrong.
I can show correlation of fastest growth, wealth and power of both USA and Rome with strenghtening of middle class.
And drop in power, wealth and general economy of nations where wealth gets concentrated.
So what do you have, except for "thats a load of BS"
#49 to #44 - kmichel (02/13/2013) [-]
Take a look at the iPad Mini. It has components from both LG (a Korean company) and Samsung (a Japanese company). LG's display costs $80, and Samsung's A5 processor costs a significant chunk of change as well. Memory alone (32 gb) adds about $30 in materials cost. That's on a $329 device, which is far less than the $500 one you mention.
#52 to #49 - kmichel (02/13/2013) [-]
You can read a full breakdown here. I was a little off on the processor cost. You need to login to view this link f-Materials-Teardown-Analysis-Reveals.aspx
#55 to #52 - angelusprimus (02/13/2013) [-]
Assembly value, which i talked about, means "how much does it cost to take all the components and put them together"
And what I said is that those components could be made in USA since neither South Korea nor Japan are a low wage countries.
A5 processor is MADE by Samsung in Japan (workers get pretty similar wages as USA ones do). BUT it is desinged by Apple, american company, on the technology by ARM holdings, which is British company.
Technology in screens is patented to Apple and produced by LG on Apple contract. Produced in South Korea, again high wage country.
#62 to #55 - kmichel (02/13/2013) [-]
Sorry then, I went off after reading the first part of that because there are people who just don't grasp how much technology goes into something like a touch screen and really do believe that companies are pumping these things out for absurdly low costs. It's gets me angry especially since most of my time is actually spent working in a cleanroom. Knee-jerk reaction while browsing quickly.
