The origin of holding your guns sideways came from the soldiers of Normandy back on the gool old medieval ages. Their archers started holding their bows sideways, for whatever ******* reason. And this later made them invent the crossbow! BAM! That is where it comes from!

On another note, the word "Thug" comes from a gang of bandits that roamed India many many years ago called the "Thugee"

Holding a longbow sideways is a really great way to reduce your draw lenght and thus range meaning that you can't hit the enemy but they can hit you.

No, they just figured out the best way to shoot. This affected how well their aim was, but they could spray and manage recoil, which is good for gang members.

Well, the reason they held bows sideways, is because A. It supported the arrows, and B. less downtravel.
