What if humpty dumpty sat on a wall and jumped hoping to kill himself, but then the kings men got him back to a hospital with a few broken bones and a concussion that caused him to go mentally retarded and when they say they couldn't put him back together they mean that his mental state was so damaged that he was unable to recover 100% therefore being broken and not having all the pieces in his mind connecting like a normal human.

WELL, if my memory serves, Humpty Dumpty was first mentioned in Through The Looking Glass, where he was indeed described as an egg.

there are two theory the cannon which is most popular and a bridge.
The bridge was a portable bridge that would allow an army to cross a river without using the main bridge. This was needed because the main bridge was fortified by the enemy.
This being said the bridge had a wonky wheel hence the humpty dump.
When the bridge sat on the other side of the river it fell, and the army couldn't put it together again.

That's because it was originally a riddle. It became so popular that everyone already knew it was an egg, and forgot they were supposed to guess...
