Many people suffered from childhood obesity which you can't say is there fault. Also to loose weight you have to consume less than the recommended daily amount. Couple that with the fact that it goes against our biological instinct to eat less food.

also eating feels awesome

I'm 18, and only just now has my growth really stopped.
before all the stuff that I ate pretty much went straight to my growth, so I barely gained any weight.

now that I've stopped growing I'm gaining weight pretty rapidly.
I'm ~180 cm tall and I weigh 75kg. I know it doesn't sound like much but I have never properly exercised in my life so I'm starting to look pretty unhealthy and out of shape.

I'm completely aware of my situation, and I know that I should probably start exercising soon...but every time I think about doing it, I have this idea at the back of my head that goes "...but that requires work...wouldn't it be easier to just NOT do it...you know you could just sit on your computer and play vidya" it's basically lack of motivation and postponing it until its too late and you've become so fat that you need help to exercise.

weight is also a pretty sneaky thing...kinda like growing taller.
you never really realize that you've grown taller, up until you see something that you can compare your height to.
you never look down and go "oh shit the ground is suddenly really far down there...I must have grown taller" but rather you go "oh...I'm as tall as my father now, I must have grown taller". it's the same thing with gaining weight. you really can't see that you've become fat by just looking at the mirror every day. you need something you can compare yourself with...like photos.

addiction is another thing. you can easily get addicted to eating, which in return will make you fat. you can also get addicted to watching tv or being on the internet...this also makes you gain weight.

then there one more thing:
some people don't care. they have the idea that because there's no "survival of the fittest", they can be, and are allowed to be, fat.
they don't mind being fat. they'd rather focus on other things than being in shape...which is kinda strange I'll admit that.
the lack of survival instincts could be thought as a mental disorder now that I think about it.

But what if it is a survival trait? What if they are preparing for a deadly winter, storing fat and heat for years to come.

Then provide yourself with motivation. The easiest way to do this is to tell people that you are going to exercise on (x) day. Then you look like a complete tool if you don't do it. Alternatively, do something that you think might be fun or whatever and do that instead, like walking somewhere pretty. Get a bus out of the city and into the countryside and go for a wander. "But I lack motivation bawww" is just prettyspeak for "I can't be arsed." You have to make yourself do things. Not making yourself do things is called laziness, not "lack of motivation."

Winter is fantastic for jogging. Wear just enough that you're a wee bit chilly when stood still, and jogging will maintain your body heat at a comfortable level. I do it regularly.

Maybe they just like food and hate exercise
