Well, it ended on a bit of a cliffhanger. The car never ran out of petrol and it ended with them stopping at some kind of cafe (I think) and David leaves a note about something that isn't stated in the hope that someone will find it in the future.. It then ends with the car leaving. David doesn't shoot his son but he does know that his wife is dead.

Yeah, I see. A far more kind ending rather than killing off everyone but one and leave the audience horrified - or laughing their ass off - at the gruesome tragedy. But in the end I found myself really enjoying how the movie so skillfully made me hate it straight away after watching the ending. I ranked it as "the worst movie ever" in the back of my mind and never wanted to see it again, but in retrospective the ending just made the movie all the more memorable and good. I certainly won't forget it.

Oh but that was the POINT of it all! The point was to give the audience a shocker that they felt to the bone, to experience a twist right at the end that you really would never have felt anywhere else. It was an epic "should've, could've, would've" moment filled with deep, painfull regret and self-loathing. I remember shutting down the TV after watching it, marching right on over to my bed and staring at a wall as I tried comprehending just what I felt the first time I had seen it. THAT is what makes it such a brilliant twist with a powerful tragedy punched into your face as the finishing line before you close the book.

And as my Media-teacher used to say, a movie is all about building up expectations and meeting them. Well that movie built up expectations and fucked your shit.

Well yeah, the ending certainly was the most discussable about the movie, and the part making almost making the most impact as a whole other than the monsters. Of course, I had never read the book nor do I know how it ended there, but for the movie alone I adored how I instantly despised it more than any other movie ever.

I'm all for these jokes and I laugh every time I see one. But this one was just...meh. They're supposed to be some crazy far fetched idea that ends with it being Half Life 3 Confirmed. Not something simple like aisle 13. Nice try either way though.

I though the ending was just so funny because of how quickly the guy came to the "Lets kill ourselves!" conclusion. If he would have waited another minute or two there would have been a nice happy ending. But then again, it's Stephen King, happy endings aren't really his thing haha

I was too mindfucked to figure out what happened... What happened?

The dude, that one girl, her parents and the dudes kid get into a car and drive away from the supermarket. After driving for a loooong time they run out of gas in the middle of the mist. After waiting about 10 damn seconds to decide on what to do, they opt out to shoot themselves in the car with the revolver they had.

The problem was that there was 5 people, but 4 bullets, so the dude volunteers to kill everyone else then go out to the mist to die. So he shoots everyone, cries for a second, then goes out into the mist to scream for a bit and not ten seconds later does the mist clear away and the military rolls up to say hi.

At this point I found it kind of funny, but what made me hysterically laugh was, remember that one chick from the beginning of the movie that needed to go find her kids but nobody would go with her? She's in the back of one of the personnel trucks with her kids! It was hilarious!

book: they drive for days, and manage to get inside a large rest stop. while the others are sleeping, he tunes a radio and finds a weak signal that broadcasts a message about a safe place up north. it's not a sure thing, but in the morning, with nothing else for it, they head north, following the directions given in the message. whether or not they make it is up to the reader.

film (inferior but still a great watch) they drive for days, until the car finally runs out of gas. he has a gun, but only four bullets. each person in the car kills themself, and he uses the last bullet on the child. this is a better fate for them than the creatures outside. with nothing else to do, he gets out and walks away from the car, at which point the military shows up, driving survivors in armored cars, and clearing the mist away. he collapses in despair, knowing the others died for no reason
