Volunteering is a great way to get experience and it looks good for future employers

To all you idiots talking about volunteer work for getting experience: Volunteer work doesn't pay the mortgage, you fools.

Does anyone know the real reasons businesses have been doing this lately? (Hint: Government)

It's a classic catch 22 that I've been facing a lot myself. I can't get a job because they are looking for someone with more job experience. Can't get job experience unless I get a job... and it loops on forever and ever until someone breaks the chain!

I made this some time back in a moment of frustration

YES!!! Oh my god this times a million!! This **** has been frustrating the crap out of me! All these entry level jobs asking for experience and i'm like "where the **** do you get the experience if the first rung on the ladder requires experience?"
User avatar #22 - weenieandthebutt (02/09/2013) [-]
the saddest thing is that even you need some form of experience or qualification just to work for free, do an internship or gain experience of any kind (even if it's out of your own expense).

Everytime I get asked why I can't find a job...I tell them this, and no one believes me. "oh you're just lazy, how can they post it in the "no experience required" if they want you to have 2 years of experience? stop lying." "idk but when I find them, I will kill them."

I just got graduated from college, I'm officially a Vet... but guess what, I can't get job unless I have 2 years of experience in my field, **** this **** ...
User avatar #46 - Soilwork (02/09/2013) [-]
It's easy to get the 2 years when you're in college by interning and some of them pay too
It's basically like you need to go through the tutorial before you can start level 1

Christ people. Volunteer or gt an unpaid internship. You remember all your teachers saying you need to get your **** together in high school and do extracurricular activities, make mock resumes, etc.?

They weren't just blowing smoke up your ass you dense fools.

most employers couldn't give a damn about volunteering, a lot of them don't even care about the internships, they want full time employment where you got paychecks and were an official employee. It's hard to even get a job at somewhere like barnes and nobles or target unless you know someone, you don't even have a chance if you have no work experience. when I was 16 employers told me I had to be 18 so that their insurance would cover me, when I was 18 they told me they were looking for someone with experience, some were even surprised I was 18 and hadn't had a job yet, the same people who turned me down at 16/17. now I'm 20 and have been told flat out they would hire me if I had previous employment, all my extra curricular and volunteering is useless. so now I'm just taking extra classes at college to take up that spare time and trying to find some place that's hiring. I'm not bitching or anything, but it's not that easy, at least not where I live, when the economy crashed a lot of people had to take 2 or 3 part time jobs, so if it's between some kid wanting money for a car and a guitar or a parent feeding 3 kids, who's going to win out?

Volunteer work; you should have done some while you were still in school.

Afni, you should try it. I got a job almost right after applying. They only hire once a month though You need to login to view this link
