ImaFirinMahLazar (02/08/2013) [-] But what if a grandparent or aunt/uncle was brown eyed? I'm sure its not always the parents genetics that the child receives. Correct me if I'm wrong, but if a grandparent has brown eyes they still have a chance to have brown even if both parents have blue?
I'm no scientist I just know that some features come from different relatives. (My buddy supposedly got his height from his uncles when he is almost 6' if not taller and his dad is 5'7-5'8 and his mom is shorter.)

Genes are either dominant or recessive. Dominant means it is expressed over other genes, and recessive means that other genes are expressed over it. Basically, if you have a brown eyed gene it'll be expressed, and if you have a blue eyed gene and a brown eyed gene, the brown eyed gene will still be expressed. So no, two blue eyed people can't have a brown eyed child. However, two brown eyed people can have a blue eyed child.

It's all about dominant and recessive genes.
Mothers and fathers blue eye colours are both Dominant genes (two big X)
And lets say, grandmothers green eyes is a Recessive gene 1x
And grandfathers brown eyes is a Recessive gene 1x
No 1x or even 2x can dominate 2X
Basically, if both mother and father had different eye colours, only then recessive genes can come in place

alhemicar (02/08/2013) [-] but sometimes, in rare cases a recessive and a dominant gene have the same strength, and so the eye color would be brown-blueish. for example, my mother has green eyes and my father somewhat grey eyes (prob blue and brown) and I have brown eyes. And no, I know I'm not adopted.

Height has a couple of genes that code for it, plus environmental factors so it would be hard to say. Also, this anon is correct in saying it has to do with dominant and recessive genes, but blue eyes are the recessive gene and are only expressed when both your genes are for blue eyes. Brown eyes are the dominant gene.
