The Harry Potter series purposely does this because as our generation grows up the movies did as well they were targeting us as an audience because if you look at the first movie it progressively gets darker.

It doesn't suck for everyone........

And then Harry works for the Ministry of Magic and then his wife and kid are murdered. Soon he'll move to New York City, join the NYPD, and start a new family. What can possibly go wrong?

Fun Fact: Harry Potter was intended to get dark as it went along through Harry's teenage years because the readers were also beginning the same growing up process. The whimsical dream of being a chosen one, fun filled magic and snake slaying of the readers was dying with age, so instead Rowling introduced things like Cho and sexual tension between Ron and Hermione. In fact, the death of Hedwig symbolizes the complete separation from the initial children's fantasy realm Rowling created and established both the readers and Harry into young adulthood.
