Why You Shouldn' t Buy
a Mac
Written by your friend an
Mac computers are more popular nowadays than they' ever been. Why is this? it' s common knowledge that they cost more than PCs, so
why are so many people willing to buy them? is it the fact that they come preinstalled with Mac OS? Possibly, but let' s not forget that OSX can
be installed on any other PC (yes, I said OTHER PC; Macs are just personal computers with a brand name). is it purely because of the appear-
ance? I will admit that they look great, but is that worth the extra money? Let' s look through the "Configure your Mac Pro" page from Apple' s
website to present the facts in a fair way. We' ll find out once and for all if Macs are worth what Apple asks for them.

I chose to dedicate a lot of text to the hard drive section, since the price differ-
inces here are Just astounding.
Here we learn that Apple values a moan was at goo. That is approximately
31 cents per gigabyte.
The Western Digital Caviar Black Hard Drive costs on ,
which is around 12 cents per gigabyte. Apple is charging about 19 cents
more per gigabyte than Western Digital, a very reputable hard drive manu-
factures. Keep in mind that the Caviar Black line is unusually expensive when
it comes to hard didn' t want to make Apple look mo bad.
Luckily. was Caviar Black lines also have in; and TTB variants. so let' s corn-
pare those as well, shall we? That ought to be fun.
Apple prices its TTB drive at 5300, while the caviar Black TTB is . Apple' s
hard drive costs more.
Apple prices its as drive at a stunning , while the Caviar Black counter-
part is priced at a much more reasonable slim. Apple' s costs more
These hard drives all have the exact same specifications. g, it could
be said that we hard drives are better drives. I Fmd it hilarious that
Apple chooses to overcharge by this much on something as simple as a hard
drive. Unless in missing something, Apple' s hard drives aren' t in any way we
cial. no wait, let me guess. They have an aluminum casing-.
Except not even that is true. There really isn' t any excuse for this; it is a blatant
ripoff. At this rate, you could actually build an entire computer for the price of
one of Apple' s TTB hard drives. And a decent one at that.
The is a rebrand of the (oh midis, always ,
the sums version of which is priced at on Newegg depending
on the brand. unsurprisingly, Apple values their remanded version at
which is 570 more at best. Price aside, this is a severly undercow-
med video card for a system like this. You won' t be maxing out any
games, provided you' re using your 5800 M'' Apple monitor. But we' ll get
to that later.
Radeon 48705 aren' t nearly as popular as they used to be. They' re two
years old now. The only new ones remaining online are around ,
which is only so less than what Apple chooses to charge. Good on
you, Apple. Still, these can be found for under you used, and the only
reason they' re so expensive now is that the supply is low.
This is just rich. All it is is a DVD burner. They can be found ANYWHERE
for 520530 and Apple' s" " is . You do the math.
Okay, I' ll be fair here. l DOES have a microphone. speakers, and
webcam. But it also costs ssoo. There' s too large of a price margin to
compare it to other " monitors, but there aren' t many that cost this
much.
And apparently, 6 more inches of screen size doubles the price.

Microsoft' s suggested retail price for Office 2007 is ,

They' re even overpricing products. its sad. really.
Let' s not forget that Mac computers are difficult to upgrade. After you spend three or four thousand dollars on a shiny new Mac,
it' ll be obsolete within a few years, forcing you to repeat the process all over again. Don' t fall for the marketing.. Don' t become one
of Apple' s mindless sheep. And most importantly:
Don' t get a Mac.

Decided to go check out the Mac configuration tool.

Maxed everything out on the 15inch retina version.
Total Price: $8600
Specs:
2.8ghz Quad Core Core I7 Turbo at 3.7ghz
16GB Ram
762GB Flash Drive

No options to adjust Graphics set?!

-----------------------------------------------------

Computer i built just last month for my birthday present to myself:

AMD Phenom II X4 3.1ghz
16GB Ram
ATI Radeon HD 5650 1GB
Acer 21inch Display

Total Price? $440. The screen cost $145.

I have always been opposed to Apples products. Granted, this is probably PC bias, as an A+, and N+ certified PC technician, my knowledge base is solely PC. But when you consider the price difference between apply, and name brand PC parts, it's ridiculous. For the $8600 spent at Apple, someone could easily purchase a maxed out, top of the line Alienware laptop, if building your own is out of the question.

Just my opinion, though. I just feel that this "Everyone else has a macbook for college, i should get one too" mentality is disgusting. Unless you're going to college for liberal arts, graphic design, or video arts, a macbook is useless to you. Only in those areas do macbooks actually shine. If you're going for anything else, save yourself the money, and buy a comparable gaming laptop. That way you atleast have something to do on the weekends. xD

Not to be an complete asshole (I know i am), but comparing a I7 with a Phenom doesn't really match up.

Although i agree deeply, the prices does not match up anywhere. People argumenting that the "Retina" display is some of the best you can get, have never seen a good 120hz IPS screen.

The differences between the Phenom II, and the Core I5/I7 comes down to heat architecture, and the FSB. Unless you plan on overclocking your CPU, the difference between an AMD quad core, and an Intel Quad core (I5/I7) are completely negligible.

In all actuality, over-clocking is a bad idea, unless someone else buys your computer parts for you. Nothing is worse than burning out your CPU every year and a half, and taking out your mobo with it.

When it comes to the Core I5/I7 line, the overclockability is completely worthless. Why drop $400+ on a Quad I7, just to overclock it from 2.8ghz, to 3.5ghz, and stick it to a stock fan, "Because it can remain within the operable temp range"?

It's cheaper to buy a Phenom II x4, at 3.2ghz, (>$98), a water cooler system, ($120), and spend the difference on extra ram, or a better graphics card. With a water cooler, you can overclock the Phenom II x4 to over 4ghz, and it would remain firmly in the middle of operating temperature range.

Believe me on this. It's better to be two years behind when it comes to CPU's. Not only is it much, much, MUCH, cheaper, but with the right setup, you can use the money you saved to upgrade the more important parts of your computer. Save the $300, and buy a better graphics card. The only time i plan on buying day 1 CPU's is if i ever make it rich. Till then, i'd rather save the cash. Haha.

Because the clock-per-cycle ratio is way higher on the I3/I5/I7 series, thus making them perform a lot better. This is easily seen on newer processors, like Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge.

Even a very highly overclocked Phenom/FX is nothing compared to a 4.4ghz->5.0ghz Sandy bridge, and seeing as sandy bridge doesn't have any heat problems, then i don't se why that hsould be a problem.

An argument made well is better than just a bunch of dudes saying "yeah, Macs are bad." It's interesting, thought provoking and provides decent ammunition against the hyperconsumerist tidal wave that is Apple.

I don't get it when people use the "money is no object" argument when trying to justify a mac. If money is no object, go buy a cruise liner; if not, use whats between your ears.

so instead of having people save a ******** of money, you rather have people spend most of there college tuition and rent buying something that will not fully benefit them when they have much better options? All i'm saying is let people waste their money however they want, posting content on funnyjunk about how expensive Macs are isn't gonna change anything. All it's doing is telling a community (that is widely against apple anyway) not to buy a Mac

What OP wants is to convince buyers to NOT support Apple and be a smart consumer. Of course, the final choice is up to them: buy an overpriced system or an reasonably priced one.
TL;DR = Apple products these days are more of a fashion statement and status symbol than an actual system

The last time I had a computer shipped (full ATX tower, about the same size as a Mac Pro), shipping was about $30 (with generous rounding)...
