Legally the government (United States) can ready any email that you have stored "remotely," (have not downloaded to a physical hard drive, so any modern email service) as long as it is 180 days or older. No warrant or cause required.

I can live with google scanning my email.

Sure. Because 8,000+ gmail users totally said things along those lines last year, because thats the number of gmail users who had their email pulled.

The law doesn't specify that the government needs a reason to pull your emails; it can be for any reason.

It's automated. Besides, e-mail has always been easy to trace and whatnot. Really, any e-mail you send could be seen by anyone with the resources.
