I'm an low-tax kinda guy, but even I agree that we should have public education. Heck, if this was the United States of Allamericandude, that would be pretty much the only thing the government would do.

With a well-educated population, you can solve
1) Poverty
2) Crime/violence
3) Health care
4) The economy
5) Foreign relations
6) Everything else

I mean, our education system isn't that bad--7 of the 10 best universities in the world are American--but there is a lot of room for improvement, especially in the elementary school system. And the clumsy, bureaucratic way we spend money on our education has actually made it worse. A government that spends nearly $1 trillion on education should not be 14th (or 17th, for all I know) on the rankings for math and science test scores. So while I think we should spend more money on our education system, I don't think that simply dumping more money on it is going to fix it (which is how our government tries to solve most of its problems).

Oh, and NASA. That'd be the other thing I'd do. I'd fund the **** out of NASA.

Also, DFTBA.

The US federal government spends only 4% of the budget on Education, but 24% on defense and 23% on PENSIONS and 24% on Medicare / Medicaid. The real problem is the state pensions these hacks get in the government system. These hacks are the kind of people who shuffle papers and sit around and do nothing. I'm dead serious there are jobs like this, the only thing is to get them you need to be friends with someone with political power. These jobs usually come with a really nice 100k / year pension. You have any idea how expensive that can be... also you have these easy labor jobs that get paid a lot more than any easy labor job in the private sector. Working as a cashier is minimum wage, whereas working as a bus driver for the state could be $20 and hour with paid vacation time. I've heard that some toll collectors make 100k a year. It's sad because my mother is a teacher and she has a masters degree and she only makes about 44k a year. But some people who have jobs that a monkey can do get paid more than double that.

He changed my mind about the need for government run schools.
#79 to #25 - anon (02/02/2013) [-]
What's it good for that US has top 7 universities when there are more foreign students than residents? You don't profit from them studying and then going back to whichever country they came from (the schools obviously do).
User avatar #81 to #79 - allamericandude (02/02/2013) [-]
Well, foreign students don't make up the majority. MIT--the #1 ranked school in the world--has only 40% foreign students. I mean, that's a lot, but there's still 60% who are residents.

But the fact that there are so many foreign students is a good thing. It means that people are willing to traverse thousands of miles of spend thousands of monies to go to school in the US. It's called "voting with your feet", and it's a great sign of success for our universities.
User avatar #96 to #81 - Fgner (02/02/2013) [-]
No, we are two stories deep in **** . Now is not a time to have foreign students fill 40% of our universities. Now is not a time to outsource. This is a time to say "Wow, we have nothing left! And everyone in the world hates us! Maybe now is the time to stop giving handouts that we're borrowing from other people (billions to Egypt for instance - a country that wants us dead) and stop letting the world take our jobs and education! Let's ******* fix this country before we try and fix others!"

No offense, I hate political ******** . If the government spent less time taking bribes, kissing other countries assholes, and worrying about this stupid freaking "political correctness" we'd be fine by now.
User avatar #109 to #96 - iaminfactawizard (02/02/2013) [-]
They hate us for being bastard imperialists so we use the profits from our bastard imperialism to bribe our allies.

It's simple, really.
#34 to #25 - anon (02/02/2013) [-]
A lot of those top 10 universities are private universities. Our public education system sucks and the Department of Education is what's bringing it down.
User avatar #38 to #34 - allamericandude (02/02/2013) [-]
Well yeah, the Department of Education is problematic, but public education itself isn't.

This only works if your country knows how to spend their taxes. Teachers in Chicago make around $70,000 a year but their kids are still dumb as **** .

And then they went on strike a couple months ago demanding a 30% pay increase.
User avatar #118 to #114 - trowlernotparas (02/02/2013) [-]
Yeah that's complete ******** . I go to a private school where the teachers only make around $25,000, yet we score substantially higher on our act's every year than the public schools nearby.
#127 to #118 - solinvictus (02/02/2013) [-]
Teachers at private schools tend to be much more devoted to actually teaching than at public schools. I went to both at one time or another, and the private school teachers were really good, though the upper management was more concerned with sports than education, driving people like myself away from the school. That was unfortunate.

Wrong. He wasn't born.

Cage has always been and will always be.

You coulden't be more wrong:

This is taken directly from the book of Cage

Chapter one, part 1:
"At first there was nothing.
Then Nicolas cage created the universe.
And **** started to down.
Then he created the films.
And harmony was once again created"

I have to tell you this man is a damn good writer.
Seriously if you haven't read Looking For Alaska yet, I highly suggest it, great read.
User avatar #141 to #99 - srskate ONLINE (02/02/2013) [-]
Okay, just curious, is there a blow job scene in that.
I feel like someone read the blow job scene on the bus.
User avatar #144 to #141 - IAmAdamSavage (02/02/2013) [-]
Yes, haha there IS a blowjob scene. I'll lay it out:
Tiniest spoiler possible ahead, maybe? Idk if you like complete surprise don't read ahead.
Well, the protagonist meets this girl, gets a bj from her, she sucks at it, they go talk to Alaska, she tells them how. They do it in the campus rec room. This sounding like the book?
User avatar #149 to #144 - srskate ONLINE (02/02/2013) [-]
Yup, thats the book.

I'm gonna go check it out.
I feel the need to clarify that I'm going to check it out on your recommendation, not because of the blowjob scene.

User avatar #259 - pianoasis (02/02/2013) [-]
No one ever said to get rid of the school system, it's just pretty ******* obviously screwed up.

Everything is based on a set of guidelines, and no matter how creative you were or how ingenious your individual work was, you will be graded on those guidelines and nothing else. An example is the 5 paragraph writing system. Teachers DEMAND this from you. Even if you had a creative idea of a narrative story that could explain your opinions better, you are forced to write this ****** , non-fiction essay for the sole fact that it's easier for the teachers to grade.
