he did it to show that even the best and the most powerful can be destroyed. like the entire movie was explaining his purpose. there are so many quotes, like the one about the only sensible way to live is without rules, the one about how it's not about money, it's about sending a message (everything burns). also what he did to harvey dent kind of proved his own point, in the end of the movie it is assumed that batman won, when in reality the joker won because he got his message across without being completely defeated

I have always admired the Joker more than any other fictional character
through his insanity, and through him overcoming his insanity he bacame the most feared and powerful person in Gotham City. His ruth, and his understanding of the feral side of the human nature and his intricate manipulations of the body, mid and soul, and his use of fear as a tool of power inspires me even today.
