Apples to Oranges, I see your point but it doesn't really apply. Your girlfriend has access to things like the television and the internet. With those she can learn non-regional diction. Either way both are still American accents. If your girlfriend were to be educated exclusively by people with British accents and without external sources, you bet your sweet ass she'd have a British accents.

Please, America is like the rebel step child of England; "you're not my real dad, you can't tell me what to do! I'm going to have my own government, with black jack, and hookers!"
(same goes for France, Germany, Spain, Finland and Sweden. New Orleans, Mexico, Delaware, New Sweden; none are still like the original collonies)
