I'm not an expert on weapons, but wouldn't a smaller sword be more effective?

Something with a reasonable weight and size so you could actually swing it effectively and hit somebody?

Yes a sword that big would do fatal damage to anyone it hit (if it was actually metal) but it would move so slow anyone could dodge it.

It's a Zanpato, literally translated as a "horse killer" sword. it was designed to damage both horse and it's rider to help curtail the advantages cavalry has over infantry. I doubt it was ever actually used in combat though.

In the anime Samurai X, Sanosuke(the cosplayer's character) does use it in combat. It is unsharpened and he uses it to crush his opponents.

Lol, no, it is a fictional sword. Hence why i said I doubted one was ever actually used for combat. Although it would be pretty neat to see what a real one would look like. I imagone some nerd trying to pick it up to impress his friends, and tipping over. The sheer physics of anime swords alone means they couldn't be used. Like Clouds sword from Final antasy, no matter where he held it, even if he was strong enough, it's sheer weight would make him fall over.

Yes it would, but in most animes they use those giant swords at incredible speeds. So it's a mixture of speed and range.

Im not an expert in swords but i am an expert in weight and if that thing was metal there would be no way an human could pick it up and swing it. Its just too long and there is no real way to balance it trying to swing that thing would break your wrists.

No, I'm somebody who doesn't know anything about swords, except that you can stab people with them.
