We don't get less intelligent every generation. Every generation the population as a whole is smarter. That's why the older you are when you take a IQ test the lower your score will be..

Well no.
Because IQ is based upon pattern recognition, argument skills and math.
The reason older people on average do worse with those is because when you get old, senility and other brain problems occur, hence why more old people have Alzheimer's, dementia, etc.

But you are correct the society as a whole is getting smarter, but that is because a small minority is pushing higher and higher, whereas most other are staying about the same.
Not to mention that it is easier to communicate now, with the internet, rather than by post 100 years ago, a courier 100 years before that, etc.

The difference in IQ when you get older is slight. They use it on mentally retarded convicts so they can avoid getting the death penalty. 5 IQ points can save a life, albeit a retarded ******** .

That is the point, your IQ stays the same as you get older.
And the average had and always will be 100-110.

So again, i emphasize, old people are not stupider, as pattern recognition, argument skills and math are universal.

I never said the elderly's intelligence regresses, some studies show in some regards they get sharper.

You said that " the older you are when you take a IQ test the lower your score"
But that is not true.
The IQ test does not change, it covers the same things, things that are not relative to new information, it is a test about the basic principles of knowledge, pattern recognition, argument skills and math.
The average young person will score the same as the average old person, between 100 and 110.
You said that older people score lower because the population learns new things, even though the test does not test on those things, as they are irrelevant.

Yes it does... You are right people don't get stupider as they age. You are wrong in the belief that the IQ doesn't change. You are tested against everyone else. A 100 in 1970 is a 70 now. Do you understand?
User avatar #279 to #272 - Crusader (01/30/2013) [-]
Show me the source.
The IQ test has tested the same things for years now, and uses the same grading system
It does not test how "smart" you are.
It tests
Pattern recognition
Argument skills
Math
Those things do not change, your score does not change, or else people who took the test back then and got average, would now be retarded.
But they aren't.

Dude, how ******* thick are you. The average score changes. 100 IQ is always the average because every generation gets smarter, they adjust what counts as 100. If it NEVER changed a gas station attendant would be a MENSA member. Do you get it now? It really isn't a tough concept.
User avatar #289 to #283 - Crusader (01/31/2013) [-]
That's not true, you aren't seeing what I am saying.
If a 100 back in the 70's is a 70 now, then people who were fine then you be technically retarded now.
It doesn't work like that, someone who got a 100 back then would get a 100 now (or very close to it) because of the fact that what they test does not change.
We learn new facts, new trivia facts, things that are unrelated to what they test.

I don't think IQ is even a reliable way of measuring intelligence, there are many different types of intelligence
