Seems a lot of people are confused over the "scientists don't know why we need sleep" one. I might be wrong on this, as it's been a while since I researched it myself (and I'm too lazy to do all that over again) but scientists really don't know why we need sleep. We know what the effects of not getting sleep are, but we don't know why they happen. That's all it's saying.

It's like if you didn't know what our bodies used water for: You still know that you need to drink water to survive, but you're not sure why that is.

Yes we do, your brain performs upkeep when you sleep. When you don't sleep, your mental acuity erodes because your brain keeps working at full capacity without a chance to perform maintenance.

Also, not sure why you got thumbed down for that, but I thumbed you back up.

Okay, but what about the numerous experiments done that show that people can function on far less sleep than what is considered normal? I think that perhaps the statement shouldn't be "scientists don't know why we need sleep" but rather "scientists don't know why we need so much sleep".

I mean, there's even a way to 'hack' your brain into functioning on 2 hours of sleep per 24 hours. Why do people feel tired if they don't get 6-8 hours of sleep every night if it's not necessary to sleep that long?

That's because it's the type of sleep that's important, not the amount. And it's not that we need that excess sleep, it's that the more sleep you have, the more you have under that needed sleep. Having more sleep is like having more money. Y u don't need it, but it's beneficial to have it.

And the thing about asking why is too many people use it to never answer questions.
"We need sleep to live."
"Why do we need sleep to live?"
"Because your brain erodes without it."
"But why does your brain need x amount of sleep?"

At some point it becomes retarded.

I disagree. Even if the question revolves around some tiny nuance I think it's still important to ask. Asking questions is the first step to acquiring new knowledge.

I said at some point. We need so much because it allows us more REM cycles. Then someone asks why more REM cycles are better, which is essentially asking why 3 is greater than 2.

I misread your comment. That is indeed a retarded question.
