I don't know... I think it's too specific. I doubt that they're emulating snakes. That seems like a connection a person would make, not one a cat would have ingrained in their DNA. It's probably just a universal way of saying "Back the **** off."

Just think of the hundreds or thousands of years cats have been around, I'm sure they've had enough time to deal with wild snakes in their history for it to be ingrained in their minds
