There are older and fouler things than Orcs in the deep places of the world.

This phenomenon is known as Volcanic lightning. It results from the tiny particles that erupt from the volcano causing a static charge which results in lightning. So as if the molten lava that will melt through you, the ash that will turn to cement in your lungs, and the flying bits of debris the size of fridges falling on you weren't enough, you now get the chance to get struck by lightning. Nature is scary.
