Or, you know, a good old fashioned spanking would work. But nowadays people go off and say it's abuse. No it isn't. There is a fine line, but a spanking isn't abuse (physical or psychological). I was spanked as a kid and i'll probably end up spanking my kids. Why? Because it works better than just talking to them and trying to be their friend. You should be a parent first, and a friend later. It doesn't matter if a kid hates you when he/she is young. When they grow up and finally get some maturity, they will realize why you did what you did.
Physical punishment is not effective. Just because it worked in your scenario does not mean it holds true. I was only spanked once in my life, my parents normally just talked to me/grounded me, and it worked. In general, physical punishment only teaches children to not do the action when their parents are around, it doesn't embed the desired behavior.

But the talking that people are using nowadays is working? Look at today's generation. Kids' motivation to learn, respect for those older than them, self respect, self esteem, and motivation to be a productive member of society has just gone downhill. To tell me that parents today are pushing children the right way while kids are acting the way they are is just ridiculous.
"Our generation was so much better than the new generation" - every generation
There are plenty of good kids now, there were plenty of assholes then. And even if they were truly worse, there are quite a ton of other factors at play here.

“I really think it’s crazy that we hit our kids. Here’s the crazy part about it; kids are the only people in the world that you’re allowed to hit. Do you realize that? They’re the most vulnerable and the most destroyed by being hit but it’s totally OK to hit them. And they’re the only ones! if you hit a dog they will put you in jail for that sh*t. You can’t hit a person unless you can prove that they were trying to kill you. But a little tiny person with a head this big who trusts you implicitly: ‘F**K ‘EM, WHO GIVES A SH*T! LET’S ALL HIT THEM!’ People want you to hit your kid. If your kid is making noise: ‘HIT HIM! HIT ‘EM!’”

Hitting and spanking are not the same. People are all ready to go and say "Don't spank your kids", but when they see patents standing in the grocery store with their kid yelling back at them as they try to just talk to their kid, what are they thinking? They are thinking that that kid deserves a good spanking, or a cuff to the head, or a smack on the lips. Hitting goes along the lines of physical abuse. Spanking, slapping wrists, and such, while they are categorized as physical punishment, should not be called hitting. When you even think of the word hitting and the word spanking, two different images come to mind. To equate the two is just ignorant.
My dad used to spank me, with a leather belt. sure it was tough. but he did it because he loved me and didnt want me getting into trouble. so yes, i to will spank my children if they misbehave but probably with my hands and not a leather belt

Dunno if you've read my other comments here, but my parents went out to a cobbler and bought a strip of boot sole leather. It was like a foot long, an inch and a half wide, and a quarter inch think. My dad recently gave it to a family friend because they were looking for something, but didn't have any good belts for it. The "Whacker" is finally out of this damned house.

It actually has a lot to due with Dr. Oz if you know him. A while ago he published, and swore by the fact, that spanking damages your child's personal growth and can even lower their IQ. Much later, he retracted those statements and admitted it was false, but the damage was done. Now you have modern day hippie parents who just try and talk to their kids and act as if they are full grown adults with a full understanding of everything in order to teach them instead of realizing that THEY ARE KIDS. But yeah, after Dr. Oz published those "facts", many other child psychologists quickly jumped on the bandwagon and started pointing fingers at parents and started going to social services. When I was a kid, if I misbehaved in a store (if it was bad enough) my mom would spank me right then and there. Nowadays, if you did that, you would get carted off to jail. Personally, if I saw a parent do that, I would just be happy that they are trying to teach their children the right thing and do right by them.

I'm the opposite of a badass. I was a shut-in for the most part who graduated at 16 with a 3.8 and with nearly all of my Associate's completed (public school with minimal educational programs). So that goes with the whole "lower IQ" thing too. >.>

I got most of mine from my mom, but that's only because my dad was a sub nuke in the Navy until I was 7 and was on Westpac for six months at a time. When he was home he did most of the spankings, and after he retired he did a fair amount of the punishing. I can tell you though, some kids just don't respond to anything other than a good spanking. That's how I was. My mom could take things away from me, and I would sneak them. She could ground me, but I was fairly quiet as it was so that didn't really affect me. She could try time-outs but they did nothing. I'd also like to add that when I was really young (like three years old) they went to a local cobbler and actually got a strip of sole leather like an inch and a half wide, a foot long, and maybe a quarter inch thick. It had no metal or anything, just leather. That's what we (my brother and I) got spanked with. It definitely got our attention and encouraged us not to repeat what we had done.
