People are seriously calling this "cruel" by the mother's part?
Physical punishment is too much in most cases, and just telling the kid that it's wrong doesn't have any effect. Public humiliation will stay deep in the memory of the kid, while imprinting that he deserved the punishment, while in the future it will be just a shameful memory with no impact on him.

TL;DR: I like her style.

It would have been cruel if she was hitting the kid..
Sorry if no one here has ever been beat, but I live is east KY.
When I was younger and got into trouble I got a belt....
Now I live with my grandparents because me and my dad got into one to many fist fights....

Yeah man for sure...
I'm in Tech school living with my grandparents until I can get a job..
Bettering myself so I can look back at that asshole and laugh because he never made it past the 8h grade and broke himself mining, just to be cut loose when he broke down...
