If this one works I've figured it out again.
On photoshop, make two layers. The top one you'll see before it's clicked, bottom after. Put the two images you want on.
Open a levels panel for each layer. On the top layer set the upper boundary to 210-ish (mess around with it if the final one doesn't look right, it varies from pic to pic). Set the lower limit of the bottom layer to 214-ish (again, try varying it).
Merge the levels into their layer. Now, add a mask on the top layer that makes one quarter of all pixels blocked (e.g. bottom right pixel of a 4x4 square). Then flatten the two images. Save as a png.
Next open the pic up in a program like tweakpng. Add a gamma filter. This, again, varies on the pic and brightness you want, but try starting around 0.02370. Save it, and then test it on your profile.
Try deleting 'imbed ICC profile', aparently that lets it work on firefox.
