the build up of carbon dioxide is exactly what they say, its what triggers that we need to come up for air. but if you hyperventilate too much before diving, you wont get that trigger in time. the oxygen in your blood will dip below the limit for consciousness and you will pass out and drown. unless its a situation like escaping a sinking ship or something else that you might die anyway dont do that.

the Fastets solution to this (2-5 seconds) is this: grab your wrist, hold it tight, start moving your hand up towards your shoulder (still holding it tight), release, wait a second, grab, and go down. One round of this will lessen the "spikes" by 40-60%. A second round will make it go away.
