Each main character represents a deadly sin and the entire scenario falls back to greek mythology. Willy Wonka is Hades, the boat ride is like the crossing of the river of souls, and he is looking for the one pure person to replace him.
Augustus Gloop is Gluttony (always eating or thinking of eating)
Veruca Salt is Greed (Spoiled brat who always wants more)
Violet Beauregarde is pride (always boasting)
Mike Teavee is sloth (always watching TV)
Grandpa is Envy (Wants what Willy has and what Charlie has (the ticket))
Charlie is lust (not sexual but the intense desire)
and Wonka is Wrath (punishes everyone for there flaws)

Also, when everyone is led to the new televison candy room, they are given glasses and jackets. You'll notice, once again, that there are just enough for everyone. He knew there would only be 2 kids left.
Fuckin creeper....

Oh wow, wrong in the first six words. He knew they could succumb to greed but not die hence them all living due to special treatments for whatever befell them.
they didn't die though. Both in the book and in the remake we see them walking out of the factory at the end

The kids don't die. He knew that the kids would not make it farther into the trip, which is why when they did something, he gave little effort into stopping them. He was looking for one child that had a pure heart and could carry on his work.
Also, the other kids represent the seven deadly sins.
Ya done got trivia'd!

Nobody died in the movie. He wanted them to not "survive" the trip so he can find the last person to give the magic candy to.

His factory is closed off to the public for years. Unless he kidnaps children, but then it doesn't make sense to just suddenly have 5 kids come into the factory. They're also shown to be fine later in the book and the movie.
Most likely it was just a stunt to get people to buy more candy.

When they made this movie, who decided it would be a good idea to change the name? Seriously. Why?
