Just saying, tipping less than 4% on a meal is just a dick move, unless she was actively ruining your meal.
Your right, but as a server, we all understand that this is part of the job. I get these all the time and I dont cry about it making a fool out of myself on facebook. The reason we must not get upset is because we dont know the circumstances. Be it the person is poor, or our service was lazy. A tip is a tip.
I understand a standard 20% or so tipping, but if they were eating some high quality food, the bill being high has little to do with how much work the waitress did. She could have done $5 tip worth of work but the price of food was just high. Obviously I have no idea what the situation is, but if it was a big group, $5 would be some bull shit.

why the fuck should I tip the waiter for 'good service' that's just merely fulfilling my expectations for the good money I'm paying for my food. If their pay is really low, then that's neither my problem nor my fault, that's the employer's.
The character has a good point, and tipping should be done like that; tips should be a reward for good job done with the waiters/waitresses, but he's wrong about the minimum wage bit: Their minimum wage is MUCH less than a standard employee's than say... a Cashier. This is done to ensure the price of food isn't more expensive.
So it's not like the waitress doesn't need the tips and can survive from it; the wage is far from it, and though they can leave the job, there's always a worry of leaving a job opportunity to find something worse.

But when he talks about minimum wage in the movie he also says that the fact that they make such small wage is crap and he'd be all for them getting paid more. Myself, I think they should get paid more and I like to tip the good waitresses/waiters as well as I can. I also try to use a little sense and look to see if the "bad service" is just due to a poor server who has a million tables while getting hounded on by their bosses/whoever. However, I often get a waitress (I don't know why it's never been a waiter in my case) who just comes around gives maybe 1 refill on my drink when I'm dying of thirst and I see her floating around dicking around and joking. If I get one like that I even still tip but I'll just give them whatever coin change I had in my pockets.
I'll add a specific scenario because this is the only time in my life I have tipped zero dollars. At a waffle house we got served our food and no silverware. We kindly asked for some and the lady walks off and dicks around with the cook and a customer and then comes back and says, How is everything? I said, I don't know we are still waiting on silverware to see. Oh, oh I'm sorry she says and walks off. About five minutes later she comes back and says Oh I'm sorry you wanted refills didn't you, and gives us more coke. At this point I stand up and shovel some hashbrowns in my mouth with my hand while staring her in the eyeballs across the restaurant while she looks at me about as intelligently as some kind of already clubbed seal. After that we just got up and left and paid her for our cokes since that's all we really got to enjoy. Sorry for the rant but that is the only time I have never tipped and I was so hungry that day I still rage thinking about it sometimes. Anyone have funny stories about that as well? I like to hear them.

Unfortunately it is a part of the fact that businesses don't want to pay their own employees.
Bus guys (who clean the tables), maids, and pizza delivery guys often have the same problem.
We should get rid of it, but no one wants to make a new law for it.

Tipping is BS, why do i have to pay extra for someone who takes my order at a restaurant. You don't tip a cashier, or a customer service associate do ya? This is a double standard and the one who people should get mad at for not paying is the employer if anything.
Waiters/Waitresses don't have a minimum wage, or in some states, have a lower minimum wage than the standard employee.
I believe the same thing applies to Pizza Delivery/Food Delivery in general, and some other jobs that usually request a tip.
It seems like a strange concept for the whole tipping the first place, but the only reason it ever becomes a real necessity is because of that.

You can make excellent money as a server, up to some 20-30 an hour even at a smaller diner during the rush. While some people will be cheap, for the most part generous service is rewarded. In a way, under this system you really do get paid good money for good work, and bad money for bad work. Of course it's not perfect, not as stable as an hourly wage or as consistent, but with hard work you can put yourself through college as a server.

Maybe you should get a better job bud. I always tip well, but I understand why some people don't; it's not our jobs as a customers to write your paycheck. I especially dislike tipping since I live in Canada, because everyone here makes at least minimum wage with tips on top of that. Of course, there's always the "don't mess with people who handle your food" rule though, so I tend to tip anyway.
I don't know if this is how it works in other states, but in California waiters and waitresses have a lower minimum wage. Minimum wage here is $8.25 an hour and at my old job they got away with paying me $4 because they're like "tips count as part of your pay check" and it would always piss me off when people wouldn't tip because "i'm already getting paid". $4 a hour isn't enough for someone to live off of in California.
