I'm from Australia and I REALLY don't understand why people MUST get tips in america. In Oz you work for your pay not your tip and if you get a tip it means you have done an outstanding job. I hate the idea that you have to tip somebody who didn't even make your food but simply just bought it out on top of what you are already paying which is to go out and have food.

Here in the U.S., servers get paid less than minimum wage (I believe it's 3.75 here in Ohio) so the tip is what keeps them below poverty line. It's stupid that we don't simply raise minimum wage, but that's why.

Employers have to compensate for non-tipped servers in order to meet minimum wage if said servers did not receive the sufficient amount of pay in the form of tips.

Oh wow, our minimum is 12 dollars and there is no way you can get payed lower unless you are underage and most waiters get payed more than that... I guess it make more sense now.

False, I am a first year fitter and turner / machinist apprentice (almost 2nd year) 19 years old, and I'm on $10 an hour. but the work is fun so I don't care
