Not sure if i have latent pyromaniacal tendencies, but I generally choose a fire type starter.

I've never chosen anything but the fire starter.

Same. Fire's like electric; cool, but simply isn't that useful.

It's useful you just gotta know how to use em. My Luxray in 4th gen was my most valuable pokemon due to so many water and flying types being used in that generation, also getting Chimchar at the start was the only fire type you get besides ponyta before you get to the Elite Four and it was extremely helpful.

All types are that way aren't they? Most of them are only good against about three other types, if that. They're useful, you just gotta know how to make your team.

Charizard can learn flying, rock, ground, steel, and dark type moves.
Typhlosion can learn dark and I believe rock (probably wrong on the 2nd, tbh he wasn't the best fire starter)
Blaziken can learn fighting and flying moves.

Blastoise can learn ice, ground, and rock.
Feraligator can learn ice and dark.
Swampert can learn ground moves.

From what I see, fire starters seem to have more versatility when it comes to battles. I haven't played past gen three so yeah.
