It barely takes any maintenance to take care of a PC, just set up you antivirus and malware protection and run regular scans. I even torrent shit all the time and I've had my laptop for nearly two years now, the only thing that happened is I got a crack in the screen but that was an easy fix. Pretty much any problem you have with windows is the fault of the user, and using a computer isn't exactly rocket science so I don't see how so many people have problems.
Macs aren't stupid, if I was more into artistic endeavors I would have one because most programs are set up a lot nicer on OSX (especially Ableton). They're good computers, but if you aren't using them for a specific purpose it's not worth the money, as long as you're mildly competent with technology.

I dug a pc out of my attic from 2003 and it booted up just fine and was able to browse the internet well, it was only used for internet browsing and email. Your parents are probably only using it for that. A PC may require more maintenance but they're still much better than macs, not saying macs are bad but pc's are better.
