I personally recommend 3, most people consider that one of the best ones. Or you can play one of the first two. The thing is though, the one that just came out lacks the full spirit of DMC and it's crazy combos and one liners, but it's more accessible.

IF you don't know what's going on, always remember: DMC is about crazy combos and silly one liners, not the story.
