Freedom of speech was meant to protect the voice of the minority opinion(s) versus the majority opinion. The minute we take it away from small groups like this, no matter how repulsive the group is, is the minute we no longer have freedom of speech. If we do this to Westboro, it could be a slippery slope towards further action against groups that the majority finds offensive, which would thus eliminate the purpose of freedom of speech.
I am, in no way, defending Westboro's actions. I am defending their right to an opinion and expression of it.

No offense, but the right to the freedom of speech as it stands in the USA is a mockery of what it is supposed to be used for.
The best freedom of speech law that i have ever seen is in Canada.
"You entitled to the freedom of speech, unless your speech or actions infringes upon the beliefs of others"
Basically, you can say,
"I am Christian"
"I don't like gays"
"I don't support the current government"
You CAN'T say
"Muslims should be killed"
"gays deserve to be killed"
"The government should be destroyed and replaced with a theocracy"
Which is basically what the WBC wants.
