I think at an earlier stage in the film they were going to use make up for his face instead of cgi, but Nolan didnt like how it turned out, thats probably what it looked like

I thought the CGI was too unrealistic. I mean seriously an eye without an eyelid an exposed gums and muscles.

Apparently he figured after the burning, it would be unrealistic to be adding stuff on, when stuff had been burned off

That's how he looked before they added the CGI. Just make up.

my guess is that it's the make up he actually wore for the set...i'm guessing that maybe later they did some extra special effect stuff?

This is probably what he was supposed to look like after his burns were to "heal".

It's probably how he looks without the CG.

Time for some .50 AP medicine

A hail of 5mm usually gets the job done for me, but when it has to be long range, I generally save the .50 AP for Deathclaws. Standard rounds usually get the job done on just about anything else.

He had little computer diode thingamabobs (don't know what they are called, they just look like little grey dots, okay) and they used those as reference points for CGI overlay.
