Dude, people do nice things a shit ton of the time just to help people. If you don't, that's your issue. If I do something nice for someone, it's because I like to not be a douche and actually be nice to people, because it's just the non-asshole thing to do. If you have money on you and you see some homeless man starving on the sidewalk, the nice thing to do it buy them a meal or at east give them some money. I'd buy them the meal because they need it more than I do, and it's cool to be nice to people. I know he would be grateful, and walking right by him and doing nothing when you have the ability to help is kind of a dick move. So I would help. Not because I want a "good feeling", but because the dude needs a freakin' meal.

NEVER, EVER considering adverse effects or consequences on themselves). This is where my problem lies - being "truly" selfless is not a thing, and never was. It goes against human instinct entirely.

If you were truly doing a good deed, you don't need to mention it. It was still a nice thing this girl did, but there was no need to post about it when you know that you're going to be praised for it.
