Here in Japan we can't tip. It's really weird to get used to. People would actually run after you with your change in some situations because it is considered an insult to tip them. It essentially says that you pity them and think that they need money, not that they deserve it for doing a good job.

I've noticed that here, but places are usually more than willing to do separate bills for people. I went on a double date a little while after I got here with one of my friends and his gf, and we split the bill at the karaoke place we went to. The look of disgust the cashier gave us was priceless, but I learned really quick that you just don't do that.
