I only tip if my service is exceptional, because I live in a civilised country where consumers and workers are protected by law, and must be paid minimum wage no matter what.
None of this "we'll make it up to minimum wage if your tips don't cover it" ******** .
User avatar #178 to #169 - techketzer (01/16/2013) [-]
So a overbearing state taking and redistributing it's citizens wealth at a whim is civilized now, huh?

Aahahahaha
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

HAHAHAHA

So being paid a ridiculously small wage is civilised now?
I'm not from a damn commie country, we just have functional minimum wage laws.
#195 to #190 - techketzer (01/17/2013) [-]
You've got it backwards.
Try to realize that a "commie country" is nothing else than a nation run by an overbearing state taking and redistributing it's citizens wealth at a whim.

Making sure that employers actually pay their employees a fair wage is not "redistributing wealth at a whim"

Am I the only person who only tips male waiters in my various regulars?
I don't want the ladies to think I'm hitting on them. Plus, waiters tend to joke more than waitresses, I guess.

waiters/waitresses in America get paid less than half minimum wage in most towns and cities, and are expected to compensate the rest of the minimum wage income with tips. So everyone throwing a fit about the whole you didn't tip enough thing, two tables tipping three dollars every hour puts you at 8 dollars an hour, so the tip portrayed above is fine.
#148 to #143 - anonymous (01/16/2013) [-]
I love when a server has like a ****** attitude and gives sub-par service then complains when they get no tip. If you want a tip, work for it. It's not an entitlement.

Thats because in America waiters are allowed to be paid below minimum wage. They only make about $3 in regular wages because people tip them so much. Whereas in the UK and most other countries waiters are paid normal salaries and tipping isnt a big deal. If you dont tip there it isnt a big deal, but if you dont tip someone in America then you're ******* them over.

I guess that's cool but the tip is supposed to be 20% so he basically screwed them out of a buck fiddy so he could make a cute joke. Sorry, but as a restaurant server this would really piss me off...

Well...it's not in every country you tip and even if you always did, it's still based on the actual service level of the waiter?
User avatar #141 to #136 - drunkasaurus (01/16/2013) [-]
In the U.S. the etiquette is that you tip 20% as long as you ate your food. They literally pay waiters less than minimum wage because tips are expected to make up for it. Unless your server ***** up apocalyptically you really shouldn't tip less than 20%. I don't know what the rule is in other countries. I know in Germany you just round up to the nearest dollar.
#183 to #141 - thecoldevil (01/16/2013) [-]
Yeah I personally live in Denmark and tips aren't really expected. But that is linked to the salary being much higher for waiters here indeed.

Here in Japan we can't tip. It's really weird to get used to. People would actually run after you with your change in some situations because it is considered an insult to tip them. It essentially says that you pity them and think that they need money, not that they deserve it for doing a good job.

I've noticed that here, but places are usually more than willing to do separate bills for people. I went on a double date a little while after I got here with one of my friends and his gf, and we split the bill at the karaoke place we went to. The look of disgust the cashier gave us was priceless, but I learned really quick that you just don't do that.
User avatar #102 - schneidend (01/16/2013) [-]
I usually tip 20%, but I don't see the problem with this tip. Not everybody is as stupid with their money as I am. Unless you're really good at what you do, you shouldn't expect more than 10-15%, if that.

There is, but employers can pay their workers less if they can get tips. Minimum wage where I live is a little more than $9/ hour, but some waitresses I know only get $6 or $7/ hour because they can get tips.
User avatar #130 to #107 - passi (01/16/2013) [-]
wow, 9 an hour where you live? In ohio it's 7.70 an hour, and if you make tips, I believe it can be as low as 5 something
#152 to #130 - anonymous (01/16/2013) [-]
Oklahoma minimum wage is 7.65 an hour, if you are a server or other tip dependant personel they can pay you as little as 3.25 an hour.
User avatar #108 to #107 - respectacles (01/16/2013) [-]
so its actually not a bad job if they get like 4 dollars for a tip and they do 2-4 tables an hour

Dear Americans below complaining about other countries not tipping: We pay out waiters a decent salary, tipping is only necessary in most of the world if they were above par.

OP claims Americans shouldn't complain about tipping?

Why NOT? Since the customer does not determine the employees wage the customer shouldn't have to worry about the employees wage. It's not the customers job to insure the employee gets paid the correct amount it's managements. OP implied yes implied that it's the customers fault. It isn't
