The first two games to come out in Japan were Red and Green, with Blue being the third edition like Crystal, Platinum and Emerald are.
As such the protag and rival were called Red and Green, with the girl being called Blue.

However, only Red and Blue made it out of Japan, so they changed his name to Blue in the English versians, which didn't make much sense once the manga and remakes came out.

I don't know if this content is supposed to be based on the manga or the games. But in the American version of the games, Red is the main guy, Blue is the rival, and the girl's name is Leaf. There's no character called Green except in the Japanese versions.

He's "Blue" in the manga too.
Fanmade translations call him Green though
