>Decide to listen to girlfriend bitch about everything
>She finally stops
>Sees me still listening intently
>Breaks up with me saying that I am too clingy and she feels uncomfortable.
What else could've happened...
>Girl is bitching, decide to tune her out
>She stops bitching after an hour of it non-stop
>notices I haven't been paying much attention
>Breaks up with me, saying I need to get my priorities straight.

You have to understand, though. Boys are not only biologically different than girls, but they are raised in society a lot different, too. Did you happen to catch that content about a 1970's book further on up?
Many guys will find it very hard to stop, think, and actually understand a girl when she hints to things. Girls expect guys to just know things. This is much of the reason there is such a communication barrier between the genders.
However, if the guy's sensing and feeling side is more developed, he has more of a chance. Take myself for instance; I was raised by two incredibly matriarchal families. Being around so many girls for so much of my life, I have a little more sense than other guys...even though, as a side effect, I don't like to socialize with many guys my age.

That's the problem, or one of. Guys are upfront. When they're feeling bad they will either:
A.) They actually don't want you to know and burden you so they hide it
B.) Tell you because... well, why hide it?
Girls insist on men just knowing when we really just want some things a bit more upfront.
