I'm pretty sure you can't have braces until 12-14, so not fifth grade, 7th or 8th (I don't know what Americans call those years).
It's not just about the teeth, jaw bone and cheek bone formation are also required to mature. I had braces, I was told all of this, I had to wait until I was 14, mainly because my wisdom teeth were coming in early and I had them removed.
But the earliest person I've ever known to have braces was 11, and it causes him complications during puberty. (because of growth)

If you were undergoing treatment for GHD at that age it really surprises me that your orthodontist would have allowed you to have braces.
Most children will have all of their adult teeth by the time they're 13, you say you were 2-3 years behind other kids...
